Windows 10 - Great Gift or Pain In The Ass?

Windows 10 has been out for almost a year and It's possible that we're beating a metaphorically dead horse here, but we believe that you can never be too informed.

"Who doesn't like getting free stuff?"

This question seems easy enough to answer. Nowadays, we live in a world where every last dollar counts, and when an opportunity arises to receive a product or service at no cost to you, it should be a no-brainer, right? Well, before you answer that question, let's take a moment to review the pros and cons of upgrading your computer to Windows 10.

First and foremost, we should mention that a "free" upgrade to Windows 10 is just that, an upgrade. Eligibility for that upgrade requires your current PC already be running either the Windows 7 or 8 operating system. Users who are running an older operating system such as Windows Vista or XP will have to purchase a license in order to get their copy of Windows 10, but for now, let's just pretend everyone reading this blog has the ability to upgrade without cost.

"What's in it for me?"

Like any decent upgrade, Windows 10 comes packed with new and exciting features that capitalize on current technology, such as personal assistants, which have been utilized by both Android and Apple on mobile phones for a little while now. Windows 10 introduces us to Cortana, Microsoft's own personal assistant. Cortana makes use of the hands-free system of using commands to get quick information without having to leave what you're currently doing. Simply enable the "Hey Cortana" function in the Cortana settings menu, and begin asking questions. Cortana will fetch your weather, check your schedule, create an appointment, or even tell you the age of your favorite celebrity. For more information on Cortana and how best to utilize her services, you can read this article from lifehacker - Everything You Can Ask Cortana to Do in Windows 10.

Another great feature present with Windows 10, is the ability to create multiple workspaces with Virtual Desktops. If being organized is the key to your success, then Virtual Desktops is a tool that will open up a world of possibilities. Simply drag your open windows into multiple desktops in order separate your workspaces by content, task, or applications. With a list of shortcut keys allowing you to create new desktops and switching between views, the strategy to staying on task is truly at your fingertips. Now to be fair, Windows 10 isn't necessarily for everyone. If you're far more comfortable with your current operating system of Windows 7 or 8, then why shift the status quo? And if you do choose to upgrade, Windows 10 can wreak havoc with your current system settings, leaving you frustrated and scouring the internet for needlessly over-complicated answers. At NGL, we recognize that not only is your time and peace of mind incredibly valuable, but we also recognize that the value of your hard-earned dollar. While we do offer a Windows 10 upgrade service for a nominal fee, we will always be more than happy to answer any questions you have, give you our recommendations, and offer any advice that will allow you to feel comfortable with your decision.

June will be the last month that Microsoft will offer the Windows 10 upgrade to Windows 7 or 8 users without a licensing fee.
